Columbus ready to rebound against Colorado

08/20/2010 - Columbus, OH (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Columbus slumped to a 2-0 defeat at Real Salt Lake last weekend in a clash of the last two Major League Soccer Cup winners, but a midweek win over Guatemala's Municipal in the CONCACAF Champions League has the Crew back on track for Saturday's MLS match against Colorado.

Columbus (11-5-4) leads the Eastern Conference by seven points over Red Bull New York and trails the Los Angeles Galaxy by just six points for the top mark in the league.

The Crew have finished with the best regular-season record in MLS for the last two years and need to earn points against Colorado at Crew Stadium to maintain pursuit of another Supporters' Shield.

Columbus coach Robert Warzycha was missing a number of first-team regulars at Real last week, but only goalie Will Hesmer and Brian Carroll missed the match against Municipal, a 1-0 win.

Eddie Gaven returned from a concussion and Andy Iro played after sitting out a match with a sore knee. Carroll could also return on Saturday from a stomach virus that cost him the last two matches, which would be a boost with Robbie Rogers sidelined.

Rogers had surgery on his left knee last week and is already off crutches, but he is still expected to miss a few more weeks.

Colorado (7-5-7) earned a 1-1 draw at the Philadelphia Union last weekend, but is just 1-2-6 in its last nine games. The lone win during the stretch was 1-0 over the Chicago Fire, thanks to an own goal.

The Rapids edged the Crew in their previous meeting on June 5 in Colorado 1-0 on a goal from Drew Moor in the 85th minute. That game also featured a scuffle that ended with Pablo Mastroeni being ejected.

Colorado will be without midfielder Colin Clark, who suffered a season-ending ACL injury recently, but striker Conor Casey returned from a two-game absence against the Union in a substitute's role and could start this week.

The Rapids are fifth in the Western Conference and hold the seventh of eight playoff spots. However, with Toronto FC and the San Jose Earthquakes both just one point back, coach Gary Smith's club can't afford to drop points either.

That honor belongs to the New England Patriots, who are 8/1 favorites to win despite not even qualify for the postseason in 2008. The Pats also have a major decision to make regarding what to do with Matt Cassel, who played well in Tom Brady's (knee surgery) absence last year but is also a free agent this offseason.

Ironically, the Steelers aren't even oddsmakers second choice to win Super Bowl 44, as the Dallas Cowboys are listed right behind the Patriots at 9/1 despite not making the playoffs themselves. Clearly oddsmakers think the public will hop back on the Cowboys' bandwagon considering the immense talent they have and the opening of a brand new stadium.

After Dallas, then comes Pittsburgh at 10/1, but they share those odds with the New York Giants, who won Super Bowl XLII. The Indianapolis Colts and San Diego Chargers round out the top six teams at 12/1, while the Baltimore Ravens (14/1), Tennessee Titans (16/1), Carolina Panthers (18/1) and Philadelphia Eagles (18/1) complete the top 10.

The NFC Champion Arizona Cardinals got no love from oddsmakers as they were established as a 30/1 long shot to win next year's Super Bowl. They share those same odds with the Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers – two teams that didn't even qualify for the postseason. Other long shots are the Kansas City Chiefs (100/1), Detroit Lions (100/1), St. Louis Rams (75/1) and Oakland Raiders (75/1).
